One wonders why anyone would ever take on the challenge of tracing one's family history.  I have asked myself that question many times, only to be side-tracked by a new clue or glimpse into the history of the kinfolk who have traversed this earth before me.

Suffice it to say that "insanity runs in the family"

Take the case of "Miss Elizabeth Hubbard", who was one of the young girls who accused Rebekka Nurse of "bewitching" them during the fervor of the Salem Witch Trials.

Perhaps our humble roots stem from the noted Hubbard Families of Massachusetts, or Connecticut,  who helped shape our nation during it's early infancy and eventual westward expansion.

Although we have yet to uncover any physical proof to such a lofty lineage, our research leads us to seriously consider a connection to the Hubbard Family of Hartford, who were among the prominent players of the Connecticut Western Reserve.

To date, our earliest known Hubbard was named, George, born between 1774 and 1886 as evidenced in the 1810 Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York Census; and, the 1820 Wayne County, Michigan Territory Census.

The information contained on early census enumerations can be vague to say the least, so we can only guess that the George on these records is actually ours.

However, by analyzing other information appearing  within these enumerations, and from family lore, we find a couple of facts that stand out to support our theory.

In addition to two adults of the correct age groups, listed on the 1810 Canandaigua, Ontario, NY Census, in the George Hubbard household, there are three males and one female, all under the age of 10-years old; which coincides with the ages of known elder children of our Hubbard Family.

On the same census page, just two lines below our Hubbard family, are Rufus Case, whom we suspect to be the father of our elder George's wife, Leticia; and a Homer Case, who would be brother to our elder, Leticia.

  • Other Rufus Case researchers list a daughter, named "Lillisa", born June 17, 1782; who was married to a "Mr. Hubbard".

  • We know that our elder "Leticia" was  born on June 17, 1782, in Connecticut.  It is our conclusion that "Leticia" & "Lillisa" are one and the same.

A Nathaniel Hubbard is listed as a resident of Canandaigua, Ontario County in 1800; and in nearby Avon, Ontario County in 1810.

  • It is mentioned in Ohio History that a Nathaniel Hubbard and his large family had migrated to Ohio about 1814 from New York.

  • While possibly related to our Hubbard Family, it has not yet been proven if this is the same Nathaniel Hubbard in the 1800 and 1810 Enumerations.

Regardless of where our George Hubbard was born, we do know he came into this world in the era of the American Revolution; perhaps during the same time as the brave Patriots were defeating Cornwallis, at the Battle of Yorktown.

Oh, the history we could imagine if we could only uncover the true parentage of our ancestor, George.

That being said, our story truly begins in the unsettled wilderness of the 1818 Michigan Territory; where our Hubbard Family firmly planted their roots; tilling the soil, felling the trees, and carving out our own legacy.
