Before You Call The Vet....

If the problem is not readily obvious, you should always try to determine these vital signs before contacting your vet.

Knowing simple things, such as the animal's temperature, can help your vet to determine the first course of action.

Temperature:

Norm

103.9ºF

Range

101.7ºF ~ 105.3ºF

Respiration:

Kid

100-120 beats per min

Adult

 70-80 beats per min

Pulse:

Kid

100 ~ 120 beats per minute

Adult

  70 ~  80 beats per minute

Rumen Contractions:

  Observe movement of left flank.

Normal rumen moves 1-3 times per minute

Signs Of Estrus: (heat cycle)

Age of onset:

  7 - 12 months

Duration:

 12 - 72 hours

Frequency:

 17 - 23 days

Gestation Period:

145 - 155 days

Tips On Taking A Temperature Reading:

A rise in body temperature may be a good indicator of some type of infection process going on.

  • Use a veterinary thermometer, one designed specifically for animal use.

  • Insert the thermometer, full length, into the rectum.

To avoid losing it, tie a clean piece of string around it before insertion.

  • Hold thermometer in place for a full 3-minutes before reading.

  • Temperature will usually be lower at night, or in cold weather.

  • Temperature can also be affected by age, excitement, stress, and exercise.

Tips On Detecting Estrus:

The onset of breeding season is estimated at about 10-weeks after the longest day of the year, or about mid-June.  Here in our area, goats are generally bred from late August, until early February.

Classic signs of heat are excessive bleating, restlessness, swollen vulva that sometimes has a mucus discharge, with excessive tail twitching, and standing for mount.

Of course, exposing the doe to a buck is the only sure way to determine if the doe is definitely ready to be bred.
