OUR FARM MOTTO:  "IT'S NOT YOUR, NOR IS IT MINE, IT'S JUST ONE-N-UDDERS!"

Dairy Goats are Multi-purpose Animals

Goats were one of the first animals to be domesticated by man.  Besides providing milk, meat, clothing, soap, beauty aids and fertilizer; the goat offers loyalty and companionship.

Contrary to the "smelly-tin can eating" image; goats are among the cleanest of all farm animals.  Normally, a goat will not  lay in filth, or ingest contaminated foods; unless forced to do so, from a lack of access to a quality food source, or from improper herd management.

Goats are small, easily handled, alert, intelligent, socially inclined and affectionate.  Being natural browsers, they prefer eating fresh growing vegetation.  Unlike other grazing animals, like horses, cows and sheep, they will rarely eat close to the ground.

Considered the "Poor-Man's Cow"

Dairy goats are the preferred dairy choice in many countries.  They can be raised easily in all climates and do not need elaborate housing.

The does and kids are odorless. The mature bucks have a "musk-like" odor during the breeding season, but are not overly offensive with proper management.

Providing A Wide Range of Products

There is no perceptible difference between the flavor of properly handled goat milk and that of cow milk. Both are good sources for calcium and iron.

Goat milk, however, is whiter in color and easier to digest, due to the small fat globules and soft curds.  Some people, otherwise allergic to cow's milk can tolerate the milk of the goat.

The meat of the goat is called by many names, chevon and cabrito are the most readily recognized.  While considered a basic staple in many countries, it is often listed as a delicacy in finer restaurants throughout the USA.  Like any other protein source, texture and palatability are determined by the carcass quality and preparation.

The Whole Goat & Nothing But The Goat

In addition to the obvious of meat and milk, the goat produces a beautiful hide.  Goat furs and leathers are used to make quality outerwear, including jackets and "kid" gloves.

The hide is soft and fine grained, when well cured.  Pelts from younger animals is soft and luxurious.  Tanned with the "fur" on, they make beautiful, yet durable rugs or wall hangings.

The fecal pellets from the goat make an excellent fertilizer.  With the proper composting, this rich and

natural by-product can be used as an organically safe plant dressing.  Nanny Berries, sprinkled around the vegetable garden, especially when first planting, makes a safe, slow-release fertilizer.  Brewing up a batch of Nanny Berry Wine, and applying to your plants, makes a great pick-me-up for your vegetables and flowers.
